First day in Iceland I went from the airport straight to the car rental and then drove for 2 hours to Eyjafjallajökull. While driving I kept looking in the distance as the cloud of ash should have poped up in the horizon any second. It never did. The clouds and the ash around it made it seem like just mist. SO when I got there I knew I arrived from the surroundings. Streets covered in wind blown ash, deserted little villages and most of all the strange sound that could be heard up un the mountain. I think because of this the feeling was much more spectacular. Later on, as the sun began to set and wind to settleI was able to see the huge cloud of ash rising on top of the mountaintop and clouds. After my tour of the mountain on walked roads I decided do take a night drive on the wild and closed part that was the back side of  the volcano. I asked around and recieved a lot of mixed info so at one point I just followed a huge 4×4 that was going off road and the only possible destination was the one I was looking for. Unfortunately the volcano was quiet that night. No lava was coming out, just ash. I waited there until 2.00 AM and returned on the main road.

So the second day at the volcano (oh yeah, I have the habit of being non-coherent regarding date and posts order) I woke up in the car to a beautiful sunrise directly in the volcano cloud. The ground was shaking and I could hear the rumble of the mountain in the distance. The view was nothing short of amazing. Since the previous day I did get behind the mountain offroad and there was no lava or even steam coming from the crater I taught I’l follow the trail of ash that was heading south-east, towards the little town of Vik, 70km away. Vik is a beautiful town in the far south of the island that I have some photos from last time I was there (the ones with a black beach and big waves). Also a very nice place to try to spot the cute puffins that are so hard to find. And that was the plan to do when I get there, however things were a little differend from last time.
As I drove by the cloud of ash was lower and lower until the da became like night and the air non breathable. Ten seconds out of the car and the nose and eyes get full of thick pieces of ash, not the fine one you’d imagine, but big pieces that you could feel hit you and brake on impact. I finally was glad that I got a strong 4×4 , otherwise the car might have gotten stuck from the air filter and it was not a good place to be trapped on. The more I drove the thicker the ash on the ground was until in Vik it was 10cm thick . From the beautiful town that I saw last time, Vik was now a ghost town by all means. There was no one there, not on hte street at least, many vehicles were abandoned and houses looked deserted. Because of the morning light from the sun the image was even eerier. Hoever it was exactly at the end of the town where the disaster stoped, and from there on the sky was clear as ever and the air breathable again. I am thinking however what the view would be when one of the big volcanoes (Eyjafjallajökull is by all standards a small volcano) will errupt and what it will do to our lifestyle and economy.

Yup.

And a very adventurous trip also . Been climbing on the volcano, gone 4×4 offroad around it, gone into the ash covered lands, etc. But those in the stories to come.

My flight got canceled yesterday.  Maybe with all this talk about closing the airspace because of the volcanic ash cloud I should not have booked a flight that same day. So anyway, the name of the volcano kept ringing a bell. Then I realized that I have been there less than a year ago.

In fact  THESE, THESE , THESE and THESE are right at the edge of Eyjafjallajökull volcano .

Probably the view now is a bit more dusty and agitated. I actually regret not being there right now taking photos of that beautiful thing showing the world it’s fragility. Oh well, maybe I will catch his bigger brother, Katla in action this summer.

Yet again Iceland, I’m starting to get lost myself among the huge pile of photos that collected through time and most of them from the past have not even been published, but I’m doing my best

Also I fixed the characters settings on the blog so romanian and also chinese characters appear correctly now. Because it seems that THIS post started a real fuzz and some people are just not used to see nudity, find it offensive. I think it’s just funny to see people denying their own nature and brainwashed by modern false moral and unnatural uprising. And I find the guy from Barcelona rather funny, and when I’l see him again I will make sure I make a longer and more in depth series of photos.

Oh well, at least it made my blog well known
